Q: Can all web cams record HD video?
A: All web cams with a 1Mpx or bigger sensor can record HD video @ about 5-10 fps.

Q: What is the best consumer web cam out there?
A: Clearly the best web cams are the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema HD and the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 . Both can record HD video at 15-30fps.

Q: Can I limit the maximum recording time?
A: Yes you can, by default this limit is set to 2 minutes!

Q: How much space will a recording use on the HDD?
A: A video recorded at 512kbits/s will use about 4Mbytes/minute.

Q: Are the unpublished/unsaved recordings still stored on the media server?
A: No, they are deleted automatically!

Q: Can I adjust the size of HDFVR to fit my web site layout?
A: Yes

Q: Can I put 2 video recorders on the same HTML page?
A: Yes

Q: Can the video recorder record trough firewalls and proxies?
A: Yes, by using rtmpt.

Q: Can the process of recording be secured?
A: Yes, by using rtmps or rtmpe instead of rtmp.

Q: Can HDFVR work without a media server?
A: No, for it to work you need Red5 or FMIS or Wowza!

Q: Is it developed in Flash or Flex?
A: Flex Builder, but without the Flex Framework!

Q: Does it need ffmpeg installed on the server to take snapshots?
A: No

Q: What codecs are used for encoding the audio and video data?
A: Sorenson Spark and h.264 for the video data and Speex and NellyMoser for the audio data. These are the audio and video encoding codecs built in Flash Player 11.

MP4 files with AAC audio and h.264 video can also be produced when using Wowza, more details in this tutorilal.

Q: Can the video be encoded with the vp6 or h.264 codecs?
A: Flash Player 11 can encode with h.264 codec but not with vp6.

Q: What do my users need in order to record video with HDFVR?
A: A recent browser with Flash Player 11 or higher installed and a working web cam.

Q: Is .flv a codec?
No, flv is a container! It can contain audio data , video data, meta data like length and resolution, keyframe information, ec... .

Q: What can I use to convert the recordings to avi, wmv or mpeg format (server side)?
A: ffmpeg is a good server side tool.

Q: Can HDFVR record from DV/miniDV camcorders connected over FireWire/IEEE1394?
A: Yes if they are set up to output DV (not HDV) data.

Q: After recording/saving, can the recorder forward the user to a separate HTML page?
A: Yes you can use the JS API to do that!

Q: Can the names of the files saved be altered prior to recording (as input variables)
A: Yes

Q: Can I adjust the audio/video quality?
A: Yes

Playback FAQ

Q: Can I play the resulting .flv files directly from the media server?
A: Yes, trough streaming.

Q: Can I move the .flv files to a web server and play them? ?
A: Yes, trough progressive download.

Q: Can I make the .flv files available for download?
A: Yes, if:

• you move the .flv files from the media server to a web server OR
• if your media server doubles as a web server!

Q: What player can I use to play back the resulting .flv video files on my web site?
A: Flow Player and JW Media Player are good .flv video players that support both streaming and progressive download!

Q: What desktop .flv player can I use to play back the resulting .flv files on my desktop computer?
A: After you have downloaded the .flv files to your computer you can play them using Wimpy FLV Player

Q: If I buy the SD version now can I upgrade later to the HD version?
A: Yes, and you only pay the difference.
